Fibre Optic lighting system
A fibre optic lighting system is ecologically desirable offering low maintenance and running costs. The light is completely free from heat and harmful radiation (infrared and ultraviolet rays) so it will not damage fragile or cherished objects (works of art or delicate fabrics). The fibre optic lighting system is flexible and unobtrusive, fitting into narrow spaces without compromising the architectural styles giving the lighting designer greater flexibility.
The basis of fibre optic lighting is the light-conducting fibre. The fibre consists of a highly refractive glass core surrounded by a glass cladding of a lower refractive index. Light entering the fibre is guided by total internal reflection at the interface of the core and cladding along the length of the fibre. Optical transmission is determined by the parameters of the fibre and is further optimised by the highly polished ends.
